WELCOME > to JOY for Sierra Leone

JOY stands for Joint Operation Youths and is a Community Based Organization located in the township of Lakka, Sierra Leone. The organization was initiated in 2006 by a group of local residents, who felt it was their task and responsibility to improve the livelihood and educational quality for their children and young adults.

Together with local, national and international support, JOY has successfully implemented and completed several projects, like the construction of sanitation facilities and a nursery school for the now growing population of children under the age of 6. They also became an important vocal point for issues concerning youth and children in the Lakka Community.

From the very beginning, JOY members in Sierra Leone have been actively supported by a group of volunteers from the Netherlands. This international movement aims to (co-)finance and assist in the management of qualified project proposals that originate from, and are executed by this local Sierra Leonean organization. The movement also wants to operate as a platform for people in the Netherlands, who would like to be involved in sustainable development projects and want to use their own professional knowledge to help. This participation can basically consist of anything, as long as it will benefit children and young adults in local communities in Sierra Leone.
